The three treatment options for cancer include Medical Oncology-treating cancer with Chemotherapy, Surgical Oncology-treating with surgery and Radiation Oncology- treating with radiation.

However Interventional Oncology is the under utilised treatment option in cancer by the specialists in India and Hyderabad. The various  diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative procedures are done as day care procedures by the interventional radiologist under local anesthesia.

Microwave ablation is one such procedure in cancer care now available in Hyderabad  that uses thermal energy to destroy tumor cells.

Microwave ablation procedure

During the procedure, Local anesthesia is given to numb the area and a small cut can be made to insert the needle to reach the tumor. The site can be reached with the help of an ultrasound or CT scan. The microwave probe produces an electromagnetic energy spectrum that produces heat to destroy the tumor cells and it is replaced by scar tissue.

During the ablation, heart rate, blood pressure, and others are monitored to check for any complications. Post-procedure overnight stay and observation are essential to identify any early deviations which happen sometimes.

Follow-up visits and scans are required to monitor the treatment response, as individual results may vary.

This kind of technique can be used to treat liver cancer , colon(large bowel) cancer metastasis(cancer spread to liver), lung cancer, bone tumors and is available in Hyderabad at the most affordable price.

Advantages of taking microwave ablation
  • This is a minimally invasive procedure to treat tumors.
  • Elderly persons who are not surgically fit can benefit from this procedure.
  • Shorter anesthesia times
  • Lessen surgery time and low recovery time period for this type of surgery.
  • As no sutures are there, it doesn’t require dressing and a shorter hospital stay.
  • Tumors present near major arteries and veins can also be treated with microwave ablation.
  • Little or no pain.
  • Minimal risk to patients.

Spider Veins are thin, smaller, red, blue, or purple blood vessels that in turn and twist. Spider veins occur when the valves inside the blood vessels stop working properly.

Veins carry blood back to the heart. To prevent the backward flow of blood one-way valve closes when the blood passes through it. If the valve gets weakened or damaged then the blood flow may be difficult to flow in the correct direction and hence the blood start to pool inside the vein. Over a time period, the blood starts accumulating and bulgy, which causes the vein to form branches called spider veins.

Causes and Symptoms

Women are mostly affected by spider veins than men. Most symptoms are like

  • itching
  • pain in legs
  • Swelling in legs and ankles
  • Heaviness in legs
  • Bleeding

Pregnant women also might  get spider veins, after delivery

Bronchial Artery Embolization

A bronchial artery is one of the important blood vessels which supply blood to the lungs. If there are any abnormalities or dilation which may cause disturbance in the blood flow and also cause poor pulmonary circulation, pulmonary artery obstruction, chronic or severe thromboembolic diseases. Untreated also causes heart failure and eventually death.

Bronchial artery interventions can be used in the treatment of haemoptysis, which is a condition of coughing up blood or bloody mucus. Haemoptysis also causes trauma, infections and other anatomical defects or tumours.

Treating bronchial artery

Bronchial artery embolization is a procedure in which the blood flow will be stopped to enter the lungs. It is the minimally invasive procedure of inserting a catheter to treat the affected area of the blood vessels that enter the lungs.

Local anaesthesia can be given to carry out the procedure. A small catheter of 2 to 3 mm will be inserted into the groin and with the help of angiogram techniques, it will reach the arterial bleeding blood vessel. They then insert small particles or drugs or small coils to block the blood vessels and prevent bleeding.

What is Varicocele ? An enlargement or abnormal dilation of veins within the loose bag of skin that holds testicles (scrotum) is called varicocele. Varicoceles are common cause for infertility, because of low sperm production and decreased sperm quality. Varicoceles develop over time by time. Some varicoceles will go by own and some causes symptoms, needs to be diagnosed and treatment. Some of the symptoms of varicoceles are :
  • Sharp pain with discomfort.
  • Infertility.
  • Feeling relaxed when lying on your back.
  • Standing for a long time also causes severe pain.
Over the time period, the varicoceles will swell and become more noticeable. In this case, the treatment is necessary. There are surgical procedures for varicoceles but it is really painful and for recovery it will take a long time.
Advanced treatment

The varicoceles will be treated with advanced procedures in radiology called vascular percutaneous embolization. This procedure requires only local anesthesia.

A needle or catheter is used to insert in the groin and with the help of ultrasound or X-ray, the enlarged veins are treated. The dilated veins are blocked with small metallic coils and liquid embolizing drugs, which interrupts the blood flow and repairs the varicoceles.

This kind of procedures helps for speedy recovery.

What is acute DVT?

Acute DVT or DVT is Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs in all ages of men and women. This a serious condition occurs when there is a blood clot in the vein of deep inside the body. The presence of blood clot prevents the blood circulation in the body. Blood clot is nothing but the formation of clumps of blood and appears in solid state. This kind of deep vein blood clots mostly occur in thigh and lower part of the leg.

Signs and symptoms of DVT

The larger the blood clot the more severe symptoms can occur while walking, running or in standing position.Symptoms can be

  • Swelling in legs and ankles
  • Leg pain when walking and standing
  • Enlarged veins
  • Skin appears blue or red on legs
 The signs can include
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Cough comes up with blood
  • Higher heart rate
Ask Dr. Devu about how DVT can be treated?

Mechanical Thrombectomy

We have advanced technology to treat the deep vein thrombosis. Mechanical Thrombectomy is a surgical procedure and percutaneous, in which the blood clots will be physically removed. Accomplished through needle puncture in the skin to remove blood clots. This method is effective in removing the clots.

Thrombolysis

Break down of Blood clot in the veins is called as thrombolysis. This method is commonly called as clot busting, performed with drugs to Break down the blood clots. The reduced blood clots pave the way of blood flows.

Dr. Devu decides which treatment would be more effective for the patient, based on the emergency, pain and other conditions of the patient. If this DVT is untreated then it ends up in complications like pulmonary embolism which affects the heart.

Endovenous laser ablation therapy

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged or bulged veins in the legs. It looks like cords in the legs in blue of dark purple in colour. The veins In the legs are affected as because of walking, standing for long time, so our body puts pressure on the veins in the legs. This occurs in the legs around the calves behind the knee and in lower leg. Varicose veins does not cause pain but in some case it will be itching and causing pain. Severe painful symptoms are:
  1. Ache in the legs
  2. Burning or throbbing, muscle cramping
  3. Worsened pain after standing for long time
  4. Swelling in lower leg

Treatment should begin if symptoms get worse.

Treatment

For this treatment only local anaesthesia or numbness in the lower part of the leg is required. A small catheter will be inserted in to the numb area of the leg and laser light will be passed on it. The heat from the laser light helps to shrinks or closes the bulged veins eventually and now nearby veins can circulate the blood throughout the body. This is called as Endovenous laser ablation therapy. Once the bulged veins are treated then slowly the catheter will be removed from the leg and one small bandage is enough, the cut area will be closed.

Advantages of the treatment

  • Simple procedure
  • Minimal time is required for surgery
  • Less painful
  • Can walk on the same day
  • No scar or stitches

The VenaSeal System delivers a small amount of a specially formulated medical glue-like substance to close the diseased vein, rerouting blood to deeper healthy veins and thus providing symptomatic relief.

The Most Pleasant Experience is due to:

  1. Simple, outpatient procedure: It just involves a 2mm puncture, providing access to the diseased veins and is done under local anaesthesia, and thus any sort of high risk patient can also be treated.

  2. No tumescent anesthesia: Chilled saline and local anesthesia cocktail is injected around the veins in laser, microwave, and RF thermal ablation. This puts the patient at risk of increased fluid overload and can be avoided when we use vensaeal.

  3. Less pain and bruising than thermal ablation: As no heat energy is used to close the veins, the usual minimalistic side effects of pain and bruising associated with Laser is altogether not seen at all.

  4. Faster recovery time than thermal ablation: The patient can get back to routine from the very same day as opposed to a few days when treated by laser and others.

  5. Compression stockings not needed after the procedure: As the closure is really tight and closure is immediate, no further additional support of stockings is required.

  1. Do not sit on floor/bed with your legs crossed or having down, make them rest on a high stool.

  2. Do not stand in one place for longer than 10 minutes, keep moving your legs.

  3. Hot baths, heavy weight lifting, and long travel are forbidden for 2 weeks.

  4. Do not sleep with the stockings on.

  5. Do not walk or wear stocking, when you having swelling.

  6. Do not panic in case you notice any swelling/blister/bleeding from puncture site or anywhere along the vein. Apply pressure for 5 minutes and keep leg elevated and tie the crepe bandage, squeeze out all the blood from the bleeding site, clean with liquid Betadine and apply a dressing. Change dressing daily till bleeding stop. Take an earlier appointment if bleeding does not stop after three days.

    1. It is mandate to wear support compression bandage for first 24hrs, which can be removed after 24hrs.

  1. Take a shower (with soap and water) and apply massage oil/cream.

  2. Keep feet 30 degrees elevated while on bed with pillows under the mattress at night and over a stool during the day.

  3. First thing in morning, before getting out of bed, wear elastic compression stocking from toes to groin.

  4. Take a quick 5 min shower and then put elastic compression stocking on for rest of the day until bedtime for the next 6 weeks.

  5. You can resume normal day to day activities (including light exercises, climbing stairs) from the next day.

  6. You can resume full exercises (always with stockings on) in 2weeks (no weight-training for 3 weeks after the procedure).

  7. Walking or treadmill can be performed from the day after the procedure (always with the stocking on).

  8. Bruising, local swelling, some tenderness, pain and numbness are normal along inner thigh
